featured seller friday : the vintage design shop

Happy Friday!

This weeks featured seller is Rena from TheVintageDesignShop on etsy. Her shop is filled with amazing vintage patterns, women's attire & accessories, plus some home goodies.

See our chat & some of my favorite items from her shop below...

When did you decide you wanted to start selling vintage?

I had the idea for quite a few months before I actually opened my Etsy shop online in August 2010, during which time I did research and developed my plan. I've always loved old things and stories about the past. My day job is in archaeology and I have gone to school for many years. I actually left my PhD at Cambridge because I wanted to find another way to engage with the past rather than strictly through academic settings. As it turns out, I believe that vintage is another way to keep more recent objects alive through a greater audience, as well a chance to both reuse existing objects and make a distinctive fashion statement.

I love creating, and selling vintage online allows me to dip my toe into other interests, like photography and fashion. Plus it's a real thrill hearing back from my customers when they're just as excited by a vintage item they've ordered from my shop as I was to find it!

What has been your favorite vintage find?
I'm not sure how to pick just one! I suppose the only trend there is that I usually find vintage items in the most unlikely places and times, so the trick is to always keep looking.

One of my favourite items is the Japanese leather piggy bank currently listed on my site.
Another favorite find I admit I couldn't part with is a gorgeous 50s black wool dress.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I find inspiration is all around me. Sunny days really energize me for photography and getting stuff done in general. My aesthetic runs to bright, minimalist and fresh. I loved working at the Design Museum in London and the exciting design objects and energy from the city's varied design scene, from emergent to established designers. I also feel that you can express yourself through select clothing, whether a vintage find or a new creation through a vintage pattern. Also, I love fashion illustration and I'm totally hooked.

Can we find you anywhere else?
